Harold Short, Jr., New Orleans Performer, 2002

Words and photos by Cat Cutillo

In 2002, I was in my senior year of college at Tulane University. I was walking through Jackson Square in New Orleans and spotted a little person standing on a box dressed as mime. This story is unlike any of the others in the collection because it was the very first. Harold became the muse for my senior photography project and all the photos I documented of Harold were captured on black and white film and developed in the darkroom.

I quickly learned that this was one of three characters Harold had created. He was actually standing inside the box with soled-out sneakers around his knee caps. He also dressed as “Cajun Boy” who was a mime and “Ursulines Burgundy” for his drag performances. I credit Harold for planting the labor of love seed in my soul.
