“My mother is a drummer, and her womb was filled with rhythm. My whole life has been about recreating that womb-like experience,” said Thoth, a Parkway Village resident who “prayforms” five days a week in a tunnel in Central Park.

The tunnel, located near Bethesda Fountain, has been a source of inspiration behind Thoth’s prayforming, which combines dancing, singing, and violin playing. He calls it Angel Tunnel.

“It’s an architectural angel. Just like the angel up on the fountain, it has two wings and a body,” said Thoth, who uses only one name professionally.

“I strive towards manifesting the I Am through prayformance,” he said.

He began prayforming while living in San Francisco. But it wasn’t until he moved back to Queens, where he grew up, and discovered Angel Tunnel in 1999, that his prayformance congealed.

“Singing was something I always did privately and never shared publicly because I was embarrassed about it,” said Thoth of his unique singing style that crosses a wide vocal range.

“For a male to sing in a soprano is very disturbing to [some] people, especially men,” he said. In Italian soprano [they used to] castrate the boys to hold them in a soprano. What I have is so not castrated, but the guilt is in the fabric.”

There is a rhythmic dialogue within his vocals inspired by his early exposure to opera.

“My mother was very involved in opera, and I started pretty young imitating the various roles in opera,” he said.

Over the years, Thoth said he has experimented with different clothing to enrich his prayformance.

“I’ve worn every type of skirt and garter.  I’m not interested in braziers because they’re functional,” said Thoth. “I performed in the nude in San Francisco. That is a way to figure out what kind of clothing one needs. If one is nude, one knows how to adorn.”

His prayformance gained him entrance into “America’s Got Talent,” which aired on June 26, 2007. Thoth called the experience a battle of survival and said the audience began booing from the moment he stepped out onto the stage.

“I know how to keep my focus and that was the toughest audience I ever played for, and I was able to follow through with complete conviction and that is my success,” said Thoth.

He said “America’s Got Talent” recently invited him to appear on the show again, but he declined.

“I have the duty of love to follow,” he said. “It’s funny. I’ve been called both a demon and a god. Just not by the same person.”
